WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

You will be responsible for the electrical and data handling design, development, testing and quality assurance of the company satellite actuator technology.

You will oversee the selection of the electrical & electronics components & protocols necessary to drive the various motors, and condition & distribute the power to the various modules. If not available off the shelf, you will be in charge of designing and developing your own power & data handling subsystems. You will be responsible of success of the vacuum tests, radiation test, electrical compatibility test with the satellite, etc.)

In addition, you will take the lead of all firmware (embedded software, e.g. in “C”) integration, ensuring that all software components (input from the team + your contribution if needed) can be well integrated on the internal computer

REQUIRED:

Master’s in engineering  and Experience of at least 5 years.

System engineering approach with demonstrated experience (I.e. Good overview of a system and understanding the interaction with non-electronic or non-electric components). Experience in power electronics design, development and testing (e.g. DC voltage conversion PCB, brushless DC motor driver) . Experience in low speed (e.g. kHz) analog & digital data signal handling from sensors through various communication protocols (e.g. UART, CAN, I2C).

Knowledge in C and C++ language programming and experience in firmware (embedded software) design. Knowledge in PCB & schematics design tools is a plus

You will be the foundation of the business development sales team.

Your role will be to lead customer relationship building efforts. You will be responsible for testing the interest of prospects, validating the needs of qualified leads and building the momentum with customers until deal closure. Your primary focus will be on commercial satellite manufacturers and customers of satellite operators in the Earth Observation, Communication, and Space Situational Awareness verticals. Looking for a Technical internship OR A MASTER’s THESIS TOPIC?

Full title: SATELLITE ATTITUDE CONTROL SIMULATOR

CONTEXT
• Earth Observation satellites (electro-optical or synthetic aperture radar) often require change their orientation to collect imagery of the required target. To change their orientation, they maneuver using actuators. VEO is developing an actuator for small satellite constellations. Actuators are commended by the satellite but shall be internally steered to provide the required pointing accuracy within the shortest amount of time.

OBJECTIVE
• we are looking for someone to build / consolidate a satellite attitude control simulator for different orbits, type of payload (electro-optical camera & synthetic aperture radar), and type of maneuvers (roll slew for off-nadir imaging, forward-backward pitch for stereo-imaging, etc.). The simulator (MATLAB / SIMULINK) would need to interface the hardware directly (likely via raspberry pie) to command our most recent micro-control moment gyroscope hardware model.

TYPICAL TASKS
• Build / consolidate a satellite attitude control simulator (flat Earth model): Review and consolidate the control loop (PID); Evaluate transfer function of the system (analytically or numerically); Identify stability zones and propose algorithm to find PID gains; Run simulations for various satellite inertia and maneuver; Report simulation.
• Expand the above to a real Earth model (including orbit propagation & Earth Curvature)
• If the time allows it, interface the simulator with raspberry pi to command the hardware

Full title: GIMBAL CONTROL LOOP MODELIZATION

CONTEXT
• VEO is designing & developing µ-Control Moment Gyroscope for small satellite constellations. This µ-CMG module is composed of several sub-assemblies, the gimbal stage and the flywheel assembly are the major ones. The gimbal stage is modifying the orientation of the flywheel which consequence is to communicate a torque to the system on which the CMG is fixed, while the flywheel assembly is creating the desired momentum. To communicate precise torque to the system, the speed with which the Flywheel is oriented must be accurate and stable. Therefore, a driver controlling the gimbal motor in close loop based on the feedback received from an encoder is needed.

OBJECTIVE
• The objective of this thesis is to design in MATLAB / SIMULINK a feedback control loop of the gimbal platform of the VEO CMG and simulate its performances based on VEO’s selected gimbal motor, gimbal encoder and driver (control frequency, etc).

TYPICAL TASKS
• CMG design review: Prior to creating the analysis we expect interns/master thesis students to encompass a system engineering approach by going through the current design.
• Propose a MATLAB / SIMULINK simple model for the gimbal motor, angular encoder
• Propose a MATLAB / SIMULINK model for the motor driver (Speed loop, current loop, power stage, etc)
• Propose a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of the physical system (bearing, friction, inertia, etc)
• Combine all models into a MALTAB / SIMULINK model able to accept gimbal speed reference and implement the control loops to reach the required speed stability.
• Complexify the above models with the presence of noise
• Optimize the control parameters (PID, control frequency, etc) to get the best behavior according VEO requirement.
• Perform sensitivity analysis on the component model performance (motor, sensor, driver)

This µ-CMG module is composed of several sub-assemblies, the gimbal stage and the flywheel assembly are the major ones. The gimbal stage is modifying the orientation of the flywheel which consequence is to communicate a torque to the system on which the CMG is fixed, while the flywheel assembly is creating the desired momentum. The gimbal platform speed remains very low (<15rpm) while the flywheel speed is around 10 000rpm. To communicate precise torque to the system, the speed with which the Flywheel is oriented must be accurate and stable. Using a brushless motor in direct drive to actuate the gimbal platform presents several advantages as for example the compactness and weight. However, the motor should be correctly designed to guarantee a sufficient efficiency at such low speed.

OBJECTIVES
• Propose a motor design which is fulfilling the efficiency and velocity stability requirements for this application

For the flywheel assembly, two critical requirements must be verified, the power consumption for maintaining the flywheel spinning at such high speed and the stability of the momentum created by this flywheel in rotation. These two requirements are linked to the motor design used for actuating the flywheel as this design as consequence on the power efficiency and the torque cogging.

OBJECTIVES
• Propose a motor design which is fulfilling the power efficiency and the torque cogging requirement at high rotation speed (around 10 000 rpm) for a flywheel application.

• A CMG consists of several mechanisms consisting of multiple materials ranging from plastics, aluminum, steel and others. These materials will endure fatigue during its 5-year lifetime because of rotating parts, temperature cycling and the vacuum environment.

OBJECTIVE
• The objective of this thesis is to provide Veoware with a mathematical model visualizing the lifetime of its CMG based on practice.

TYPICAL TASKS
• Analysis of the rotating coupler (1.5 million rotations) for: Maximum torque applicable prior to failure; Friction profile over its 5-year lifetime; Determination of the temperature operation range and temperature impact simulation on the friction
• Analysis of bearings + lubrication: Friction profile over its 5-year lifetime (build a MATLAB simulation based on tests); Determination of evaporation loss rate of lubrication

As the mass of the module is of utmost importance in space applications, a deeper analysis should be performed on the feasibility of using additive manufacturing and organic shape design.

OBJECTIVES
• Provide a detailed list of different materials used in space which are currently being used in additive manufacturing
• Design an organic shaped control moment gyroscope with the help of FEA
• Manufacture with FDM or SLS (which we have inhouse) or another technique a working prototype (non-space rated)

TYPICAL TASKS
• Design using CAD
• Analysis with FEMAP, or another FEA program to determine the different stress scenarios
